Typhoon Usagi nears Kyushu, Shikoku

TOKYO — Powerful typhoon Usagi, moving northward in the Pacific, is wexpected to make landfall on Kyushu and Shikoku Thursday night, although it is expected to lose some of its strength, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Three people were injured in Miyazaki Prefecture, all of them seriously, local police and firefighters said. Two men fell from rooftops, and a woman suffered a cut finger after being stuck in a door.

Typhoon Usagi, the season’s fifth typhoon, also affected air and road traffic. Air carriers such as Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled a total of 166 flights to and from Miyazaki, Kagoshima and other cities in the region. During a 24-hour period through Friday morning, rainfall of up to 400 millimeters is expected on the Pacific side of Shikoku, 350 mm in northern Kyushu, 250 mm in southern Kyushu, 200 mm on the Seto Inland Sea side of Shikoku and the southern Kinki and Tokai regions, and 130 mm in the Chugoku region.
