TOKYO — If the minimum wage is raised to 1,000 yen per hour across Japan from the current level of 610 yen, consumer spending will expand, causing the value of domestic production to increase by 2.6 trillion yen a year, according to estimates released Monday by a private think tank.

Increased personal expenditures should have greater beneficial effects on smaller companies rather than on large corporations, the Japan Research Institute of Labor Movement said. Based on data collected by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the institute estimates the number of workers whose hourly wages are less than 1,000 yen at 6.83 million. If their wages are all raised to 1,000 yen, the nation’s total payroll will increase by some 2.2 trillion yen, according to the institute.
